An analysis of 501 randomly selected urine specimens was performed by physicochemical dipstick tests, microscopic examination and colony count to evaluate the usefulness of screening protocol for selective urine culture at Yeungnam University Hospital. The screening protocol for selective urine culture consisted of checking the turbidity of urine, dipstick tests including leukocyte esterase, nitrite and protein, microscopic examination of sediments, and urine culture tests. Thirty six(7.19% ) of 501 cases revealed abnormal positive urine culture. The screening protocol for selective urine culture showed 50.0% sensitivity, 74.6 % specificity, 13.2 % positive predictivity and 95.1% negatrve predictivity. Using this protocol, we can anticipate an increment in sensitivity of diagnostic procedures of asymptomatic urinary tract infections.
